One night, in a bar, she meets a young attorney, Fung (Raymond Lam), and they spend a passionate night together in a hotel – with no plans to never meet again. Fate brings them together again at a wedding. Their one night stand now becomes a debt dispute since Fung’s boss owes Yan’s company fees for 30 weddings. When Fung’s boss runs away, Fung is left to clear the debt and so he starts working for Yan.

While working together to organize successful weddings, they face and overcome many challenges and begin to feel affection for each other. But love is never simple – especially for Yan whose four close girlfriends do not approve of her relationship with Fung because they think he is too young for her. Yan further complicates the situation by keeping Fung at a distance because of the painful memories of her failed relationships.

Fung disapproves of portraying a wedding as a show and after a big fight with Yan he almost quits the company – but Yan sees his point of view and they reach a compromise. A wonderful night together at Yan’s place heralds the start of a new and stable relationship which they keep secret. Just as Yan’s painful memories of previous failed relationships begins to fade, her ex-boyfriend, Kevin (Eric Kot), turns up again.

MOVIE REVIEW:

Rejoice, fans of romantic comedies. Here’s another DVD to add to your collection. It’s a bonus if you are a fan girl of the good looking heartthrob Raymond Lam. The handsome Hong Kong star (he acts in movies! He releases albums! He holds sell out concerts!) stars alongside the versatile Miriam Yeung in this co production between Shaw Brothers Studio, Hong Kong’s commercial television station TVB and production company Sil Metropole Organisation.

Yes, actress singer Yeung is older than Lam (by five years only, actually). But this is exactly the interesting premise set up for the Barbara Wong directed comedy.

The plot is nothing to shout about in this day and age: It is basically a tale of how a one night stand between a man and a woman leads to a budding romance. The man is a young lawyer who has to work with the older woman whose company which plans weddings for couples. Besides the issue of difference in age, each of them has to deal with personal problems like painful memories and personal commitments. Will true love prevail by the 96th minute of the movie?

Why, of course.

While this is a generic comedy which will not win points for being original or innovative, it is nonetheless an entertaining piece of work which banks on Yeung’s winning and likeable performance as a career centric woman who will eventually find love. The role won Yeung the Best Actress accolade at the 17th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards last year. Despite playing a somewhat caricatured character, Yeung manages to have your eyes fixed on her, as she goes through the protagonist’s ups and downs. Her co star Lam? Well, without going into details which may sound harsh and mean, the popular actor does a passable job and will be remembered as a pretty face for a long time to come.

Fans of Hong Kong productions will also have fun spotting familiar faces like Teresa Oceane Zhu, Kate Tsui and Bernice Liu in hilarious roles which keep the potentially mediocre movie highly entertaining. They play Sex and the City like sisters to Yeung’s down and out career woman, and dishes outrageous advice on how to pick up her life again. You have to admit that the script is wearing thin by the movie’s 30 minute mark, but thanks to a very likeable ensemble, you are compelled to keep watching.

As the movie concludes with a happy ending, you will be smiling, and probably wondering whether a lovely story like this is possible in real life.
